Book Breakups 1: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Hey Remarkable Readers,
I've been admiring a feature of Lori's from Pure Imagination for a while now.  Today I finally decided that I should do it on my blog, too (with her permission of course!).  Anyway, the feature is called Book Breakups and the object is to talk about books you couldn't finish and why.  Here is how Lori describes it:
We can't all love everything and some books just aren't for me. Sometimes I try really hard to love a book but if it's taking me 4 days to read 100 pages, we need to have the talk. I debated quite a while on whether or not to do this feature, but I thought it would be fun, so Book Breakups was born.
I really like this meme because when I get books for review and can't finish them, I like being able to talk about why I didn't like it and maybe get some other people's opinions!  Here Goes:

Under the Never SkyUnder the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Aria is a teenager in the enclosed city of Reverie. Like all Dwellers, she spends her time with friends in virtual environments, called Realms, accessed through an eyepiece called a Smarteye. Aria enjoys the Realms and the easy life in Reverie. When she is forced out of the pod for a crime she did not commit, she believes her death is imminent. The outside world is known as The Death Shop, with danger in every direction.

As an Outsider, Perry has always known hunger, vicious predators, and violent energy storms from the swirling electrified atmosphere called the Aether. A bit of an outcast even among his hunting tribe, Perry withstands these daily tests with his exceptional abilities, as he is gifted with powerful senses that enable him to scent danger, food and even human emotions.

They come together reluctantly, for Aria must depend on Perry, whom she considers a barbarian, to help her get back to Reverie, while Perry needs Aria to help unravel the mystery of his beloved nephew’s abduction by the Dwellers. Together they embark on a journey challenged as much by their prejudices as by encounters with cannibals and wolves. But to their surprise, Aria and Perry forge an unlikely love - one that will forever change the fate of all who live UNDER THE NEVER SKY.
I've never really read a high fantasy before I started Under the Never Sky, so I didn't really know what to expect.  I actually requested this book from Harper Teen and unfortunately, I didn't like it.  I couldn't continue reading it but, made it to somewhere around 100 pages.  I just thought the book was slow and kind of boring.  It just didn't grab my interest.  I do know that a lot of people really enjoyed this book and I wish I could've.  Even though many consider Under the Never Sky to be a high fantasy, it reminded me of Dystopian a lot.  That actually may have been the reason I didn't like it.  I love dystopian but, I am suffering from a little Genre Tire.  It seems like a contemporary is in my future!

Did you break up with this book, too?  Did you love it?  Should I have kept reading longer?  Did you think the book was slow paced, too?  Should I give it another try?  Let me know your thoughts and link to your review!

  1. I haven't had much interest in Under the Never Sky. There's just something about it that seems unappealing to me. Sorry it didn't work out for you! Contemps are always the best medicine for when you're tired of everything else.

    1. I thought I'd like it at first but, it just didn't do much for me! I'll probably be reading something Lauren Barnholdt, John Green, Sarah Dessen, or maybe the probability of miracles. Definitely need a contemp!

  2. I really liked this book, and I loved the characters of Aria and Perry. I am definitely a fan of Dystopian and Fantasy books. I didn't used to be, but Hunger Games got me hooked. I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series!

I would recommend picking up this book again when you are in the mood for Dystopian fiction. It really is a good read!

  3. I definitely loved this, but you gave it a fair shot with 100 pages. I think I was hooked by about 20 pages, so it probably just wasn't your cup of tea. :)

  5. I have yet to read this one but just so you know high fantasy is normally pretty hard to read. Most high fantasy books are those chunky books at 700-1000 pages long and the descriptions just go on and on for pages on end. Fantasy isn't for everyone, especially not high fantasy. I can read it from time to time but it takes a certain mood.

I'm sorry you didn't like this one, I can't wait to give it a shot though to see what I think of it. :)

  6. I still need to read this. I've heard a lot of both good and bad things. I think it is one of those books that is either for you or not. I'm curious to see. I tried to read it once and got bored. I should really give it a fair try again.

What did you think of my post? Have you read any of the books I may have spoke about? Do you agree with what I said? Etc. I love hearing from my readers!!
